YogurtSundays Nap ZoneThe nap zone is usually between 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Like the name suggests, the nap zone is a period of time in the midafternoon when we experience transient sleepiness. In fact, the nap zone is something experienced by nearly everyone on the planet. It goes by many names: the midday yawn, the post-lunch dip, the afternoon slump…etc.

Why do we feel sleepy during the nap zone? We can rise and shine with the new day ready to take on the world, but when afternoon hits, we lose energy and alertness and can hardly concentrate on anything but sleep. Actually, this sudden slump is a normal, healthy, expected function of our biological clocks that regulate the sleep/wake systems in our body. The dip in the middle of the afternoon is our natural nap zone.

However, your afternoon slumps can affect your job performance and safety. Some individuals may feel it more intensely than others. For example, consuming a lunch loaded with high carbohydrates and low proteins will increase its intensity. Generally, however, the depth of the dip is a function of how sleepy you are and the amount of sleep you get at night.  Deep slumps are usually your body’s way of telling you to stop depriving your body of needed sleep! For some people, they may be a sign of a more serious sleep disorder that is preventing sleep’s restorative powers from fully going to work.

When the afternoon slump hits, many of us attempt to push through and spend much of the afternoon fighting a gnawing tiredness.  Some of us resolve to consuming caffeine by drinking coffee or afternoon tea for temporary relief to stay awake. However, while consuming caffeine may have its benefits, there are also a whole slew of reasons why it is bad for you.

Here are a list of some natural symptom relieves that you might want to consider instead:

  • * Take a walk — you will be surprised by how much energy a rapid ten-minute walk can generate for you.
  • * Take a nap — a brief nap can be quite invigorating, however, do not nap longer than one hour and never nap after 4:00 PM.
  • * Eat a balanced lunch — avoid eating too much carbohydrates
  • * Get plenty of sleep the night before
  • * Rearrange your schedule
  • * Don’t skip breakfast
  • * Avoid sugary snacks
